Patrick meets with his mother, who had previously lost custody for being an alcoholic. Lee runs into Randi in a parking lot where, during an emotional conversation, she tells Lee that she still loves him. Overcome with emotion, Lee leaves and accepts a job in Boston. George agrees to adopt Patrick which will allow him to stay in Manchester.

The two go out on the boat for an afternoon on the water, and share a smile. The Manchester By The Sea script makes great use of flashbacks. By bringing us into the past, Lonergan juxtaposes the present — but he also gives context and reason to it. Throughout the first act of Manchester By The Sea , we clearly see that Lee is traumatized by something.

He holds it together the best he can, but has bursts of rage like when he gets into a fight at the bar. Through the incremental use of flashbacks, Lonergan shows us why Lee has become the way he is. Perhaps the most famous scene from Manchester By The Sea — the one in which Lee attempts suicide in the police station — is also its darkest. What do we make of Lee in this scene? To me, the first word that comes to mind is honest. What kind of drugs was he using? Alcohol and cocaine. There are no lies in his story, just the unbearable guilt of responsibility. Like a million other people did last night. So what does Lee do? Lee comes out of a room opposite, followed by the Detective and Fire Marshall. He makes his way past the desks. JOE is across the room in a bound. Lonergan does a tremendous job as a director with this scene.

Just think about the way he frames his shots. This results in a suffocating feeling where we gain a greater understanding of his guilt. EMBED for wordpress. Want more? So really, Christianity as a whole is meaningless and a negative thing, but especially the ones who are really into Jesus and have a cross or a picture of Jesus in their house.

In that part of the film, that is the message and impression given to the audience. That aside, this was actually an extremely depressing, macabre, dark film. The only reason I'm giving it a two star rating instead of one star is because of Casey Affleck's masterful acting. The other actors did very well also. I wish Casey Affleck had been in many more great films over the years, and it is unfortunate that his amazing talent and great screen presence is used in such a hopeless and depressing story as this.

His performance is a 10 the other actors did great also. But film is a 1. I would like to warn readers also that there is a great deal of cursing, inappropriateness, sexual immorality, and using the Lord's name in vain throughout the film.

If that's going to be portrayed in serious drama, then it should be portrayed in a way that shows how destructive those things are, and how preferable it is to rise out of that Finally, I have to say the music score was a bit distracting and off kilter, and certainly added to the depression and hopelessness of the film.

I assumed that this was going to be a great film because it was enormously popular at the theater where I went to see it, and because it has Casey Affleck, who of course I've liked since Goodwill Hunting. That's what I get for going along with herd mentality.
